I got my property tax bill this year and am not a happy camper – yet it’s good news. 

In about 1998, my late wife, Kristy, told me to go take a hike.  She was through having me play the stock market, and she was headed out to buy real estate. 

Today, I only have one regret.  I wish she had bought twice as much real estate. 

The units we paid $125,000 or $140,000 for are now being taxed at $450,000+.  She mostly bought condo units we could rent.  That way there was less maintenance. 

I went ballistic whenever I had to deal with the renters.  I have settled down some when there is a problem at one of the units, but I still get hot and bothered.

But I am very grateful I have the rental income.  It really will make a big difference when I retire.  The government certainly isn’t going to take care of me.

When Kristy died, she had a $500,000 life insurance policy.  I took the money and invested it with Fisher Investments.  They are big boys.  You have to have a minimum investment of half a million.  I figured they could play the market better than I could. 

STUPID

I checked last week.  My $500,000 has turned into $520,000 in the past three years.  That’s less than bank interest rate returns.

How stupid am I?  I know where my money should be – in real estate.  But I don’t want to manage the units, and I am not good at finding the deals.  I just don’t spend the time with it that deal hunting requires.  I still like speaking and creating the educational materials/do-it-yourself kits to help people avoid getting hosed by the lawyers.

I am speaking at RAD Diversified’s event in a couple of weeks.  It’s in Tampa December 1-3.  Dutch has a unique take on real estate.  He makes it easy enough that I could even do it.  Yes, I will be taking money out of Fisher and playing with RAD’s formula.

Some of you came to the event last May in San Diego.  I have spoken at over 5,000 events, and that one was definitely in the top ten events I have ever spoken at.  It was just classy, in addition to being great for real estate investors.
